There seems to be quite a bit of confusion (not to mention outright contradiction) on various Polish retail sites about whether or not English subtitles are included on Epelpol’s DVD and Blu-ray releases of Xawery Żuławski’s Snow White and Russian Red (Wojna polsko-ruska), the film that won the New Polish Cinema prize at Era New Horizons in Wrocław and the Silver Lion in Gdynia, and which is widely regarded as one of the most dynamic and innovative Polish features in years.
Having examined both, I can confirm first-hand that the DVD is unusually conscientious in that department, offering English subtitles on both the main feature and the 15-minute production featurette. Admittedly, the subtitles on the latter are poor to the point of being borderline illiterate (the ones on the main feature aren’t great either, though by all accounts rendering Dorota Masłowska’s highly distinctive Polish into English is a bit like translating Irvine Welsh into any other language), but that’s still miles ahead of the norm for a Polish release.
However, despite being on the same label, the Blu-ray does not have subtitles of any description, not even Polish hard-of-hearing – and believe me, I scoured every available option and remote button in search of them. High definition purists will also be dismayed to hear that it only has an interlaced transfer (1080i), though it still looks and especially sounds miles better than the DVD.
